Trams

The battery not only provides the energy for emergency lighting and ventilation but also for overall back-up of the entire low-voltage system.

In some cases, the battery may also energize the electromagnetic braking system in the event of a high-voltage cutoff.

For this application, Saft offers many solutions:

Ferak KPH

Saft sintered / PBE MRX, MSX, SRX

Saft pocket-plate SCH-S

For hybrid tramways, the battery provides traction power in sections without a catenary . For this application Saft proposes its Ni-MH NHP complete battery systems.

Trolleybuses

Batteries are used not only for overall backup for the low voltage system (Ferak KPM or Saft MRX) but also for powering the traction. Battery drive can be used either occasionally in emergency or regularly in sections without a catenary. For this application Ferak KPH, Saft Ni-Cd sintered / PBE STH or Ni-MH NHP complete battery systems are the solution.

Heavy hybrid and dual mode vehicles

Saft sintered / PBE batteries for hybrid vehicles (such as hybrid tramways, refuse trucks, trolleybuses) provide an ideal balance of mass, power and energy for vehicles combining a conventional engine in tandem with an electric motor. They are also used as backup batteries for trolley busses or light rail vehicles when running without catenaries or skirting obstacles.

Saft Ni-Cd sintered / PBE batteries: STH, STM, MSX

Saft nickel metal hydride batteries are designed specifically for high power applications, providing excellent energy density and maintenance free operation. For example NHP onboard batteries provide traction power for hybrid trams when power from overhead catenaries is not available.
