Diesel locomotives
For diesel starting applications, batteries must be able to supply a high current to the starter motor for relatively short period of time. Pocket-plate Ferak KPH and Saft SCH-S or Saft sintered / PBE SRX, MSX ranges are used as a reliable high-power source for this application.
Electric locomotives
On electric locomotives, batteries are used to raise and lower the pantograph to connect the overhead catenary and also to supply emergency power as back-up for the low voltage system.
The battery may also energize the electromagnetic braking system in the event of a high voltage cutoff.
